And Then There Was Cake…

Antique Bakery, or Seiyō Kottō Yōgashiten (Western Antique Patisserie) is an anime adaptation of a Fumi Yoshinaga manga, originally published in four volumes between 1999 and 2002. There was a live-action series somewhere in between, but since it has been seriously de-gayed, we will ignore it. On July 3, 2008, FujiTV began broadcasting the 12 part anime series.

The story revolves around Keisuke Tachibana, who decides to change his career out of the blue, leave the job he had and open up a western-style patisserie (named after the Antique shop that used to be in the same building). His wealthy parents support his decision and find him the best pâtissier in town, Yusuke Ono. Unfortunately, Yusuke has a reputation of being “a gay of demonic charm”, who regularly gets fired because his straight co-workers fall madly in love with him. To make things worse, it turns out that Yusuke was in love with Keisuke while they were at school, but Keisuke turned him down in harsh way. Keisuke also hires Eiji, a former boxer, and Chikage, Keisuke’s childhood friend – Tachibana family paid for his schooling after his parents died, so Chikage feels obligated to look after his “young master”. As the story unfolds, we find out details about the characters and their history, all with a lot of comical, bizarre or super deformed situations.

These couple of really moderate gay elements got the anime classified as Shōnen-ai/BL (Boys’ Love). At the time of writing, only three episodes have been broadcast (and fansubbed), so we have yet to see how the story unfolds. I expect that they will continue to provide light entertainment.
